“The Magician” Painted Pony Returns to The Golden Hotel

The Golden Hotel warmly welcomes the return of “The Magician” to its facility. The Magician, a life-size fiberglass horse, had been proudly displayed in the hotel lobby as well as its restaurant, but left to join the Trail of Painted Ponies Tour for several months prior to its return to the hotel on November 19th.

The Magician, part of the Trail of Painted Ponies, which originated in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2001 as a public art project, has received rave reviews in the national media and they were featured in a documentary film that aired on PBS stations around the county. Anderson Kee, the artist of The Magician, along with one hundred and twenty other artists, were invited to transform the horses into original works of art.

The revenue generated from the sale of the ponies, which was close to one million dollars, was used for different arts, cultural, youth, animal, social and environmental organizations.

Kee, who grew up in Cottonwood on the Navajo Reservation, where his mother was a weaver and his father was a silversmith, learned of the Navajo history and its language in middle school. It then became the focus of his education, and eventually led to his devotion of the Native American subject matter. The Magician allowed Kee the opportunity to combine his love of horses with his art.

In certain plains Indian tribes there was a special tribal figure who spoke to and for the horses. He was believed to possess supernatural powers and called The Magician. The Magician is releasing a heard of multi-colored spirit ponies from the inside of his elkskin robe and then gathering them on the backside.

It is an honor to once again have this magnificent piece of artwork. It is currently being displayed in the Bridgewater Grill, The Golden Hotel’s in –house restaurant, where you can enjoy and appreciate its presence.
